Help the HTMB Get to Iowa!

My name is Michael Risner and I am the president of the Herbert Hoover High School Tornado Marching Band Boosters here in Glendale.
This is an exciting time for Hoover Tornado Marching Band and I want to share the excitement with you.
A little background, if I may.
As you know, our school was named after President Herbert Hoover.  We are one of only four high schools in the nation to be named after him.  Our school has a couple of distinctions that set us apart from the other three. We were the first school to be named for the president and the ONLY school in the nation to be named for a sitting president.  Ever. President Hoover was aware of our school and the dedication of it in his name.
We think that makes us pretty special.  And, we are not alone in that regard.
In West Branch, Iowa, the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library thinks we are pretty special too.  They have reached out to us in this, their 50th anniversary year.  The library has invited us to participate in the festivities for the anniversary which will take place in August of this year.
They have invited the Hoover Tornado Marching Band to participate in the parade and concerts that will take place on August 4, 2012.
They have sweetened the offer by providing for our transportation from Chicago O’Hare to West Branch as well as our food and lodging once we are there.
Our responsibility will be getting us there.  And, that is no small task when we are considering moving approximately 60 people and all our instruments halfway across the country.
We will be asking the students that want to go, to commit to paying a share of their airfare, in the neighborhood of $350.
That will still leave us with a deficit of $10,000 to $15,000 depending on what kind of deal we can get for airfare.
This is an exciting opportunity for our students to experience a piece of history. For them to participate in a trip like this will be an incredible experience. Indeed, one that will be a life-long memory.
The Glendale Unified School District is behind this effort 100%.  Our administrators at the school are behind us 100%.  Our students are committed 100%. But we need the help of the community and leaders like you.
Personally, I can think of no better way to enhance our community that enriching the lives of our young people. I am committed to helping them in any way I can.
I very much want to have a photograph of our band in front of the Presidential Library.
We will also be transporting our instruments and equipment in the band’s equipment truck the 1800 miles from here to the Library.
The truck, by the way, is a great example of how great our community is and what it can do for our school and our band.
Even though I acquired the retired U-Haul truck for the band to use, it was through great community partners like Johnny Harrison at Lexus of Glendale and the fine folks at WrapADs that our truck sports a distinctive and instantly recognizable logo on the sides.

We proudly wear GLENDALE, CALIFORNIA in foot-high PURPLE letters on our truck so that everywhere we go, people know the great city we are from.
We would love to carry your support with us to Iowa this summer. If there is any assistance you can provide, we would gladlyaccept it!
You can donate in two direct ways.  Via US Mail send checks made payable to HOOVER GROOVE to:

On Saturday, October 22, 2011, The HTMB competed in the 2A division at the First Inaugural Glendale High Field Competition.

We were the first band to perform that afternoon in a field of 9 bands from all over Southern California.

First a little warm up time....

And then it was onto the field for our amazing performance.  The band looked great, sounded great and most importantly, scored great!

In the end, we took 1st Place for Guard, Drumline and Performance.  Well done all!!

Well done Hoover Tornado Marching Band!

We Are Off To a Great Start!

The 2011 HTMB Season has begun and we are off to a good start.

A little rough around the edges on our first outing but the band and the boosters performed admirably last week!

Under the direction of our new Drum Major, Josh Briggs, the band wowed the audience with the music of Jesus Christ Superstar.

With the new addition of the rock band to the HTMB, we were rocking out during half time!

It was a great performance on our first outing too!

There are more great photos from our booster Kelvin Yuen here:

Thanks Kelvin!

Next week we head out on the road for an away game!  More fun to come!

What a Great Year!

Greetings Hoover Supporters!

Its been an amazing year for the band program as well as the Boosters!   As you know earlier this year we acquired a retired 24' U-Haul truck to use as the band's equipment truck.

We then set out to get it looking like we wanted it to look.  A task that would take thousands of dollars.

To make a very long story somewhat shorter, I believed we would be driving an ugly orange and white truck to the football games next year.  Raising the $3-4000 needed to wrap the truck seemed just out of our grasp.

In steps Lexus of Glendale and Johnny Harrison, benefactor to so many GUSD schools.

With his very generous support, our truck went from this:

To this:

We still have the inside to build out and thats started already.  We do want to thank Hoover Groove for their generous grant to help towards that build-out!

It's been a great year for us and the band.  I want to congratulate the graduating seniors and their parents for a job well done!  We will miss you!

And we look forward to the incoming class this fall and all the new friends we will bring into the band and the Boosters alike!

Stay tuned, we are just getting started!

Fundraising Underway!

Greetings Hoover Band supporters!

We have a couple fundraising events coming up.  Actually, one is on-going and one will be a single day event.

As you know from previous posts, our equipment truck is in need of a serious make-over to make it into the Hoover Tornado Marching Band equipment truck.

The best estimate for having the outside done is just around $3000.00.  Yes, thats three thousand dollars.  That's a lot.

However, we have good news!  We already have HALF of it!  A fund of $1500 has been made available to us and now its up to us to raise the remaining amount and get this truck done!

Flyers will be going out with the band students this week for our on-going fundraising.

We want everyone to take that money they would have spent buying the useless and junky products that bands sell for fundraising, and just send it to the band.  Wouldn't that be a better use of that $25?  Send it directly to the band and we get 100% of it instead of having to give 60% or more to a company who provides junk for us to sell!

If you wish to donate directly to the cause, we can take cash or personal checks.  Please make your checks payable to HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL.  Also, if you wish to donate with a credit card, email me and I can set up to accept your donation through PayPal and get you a receipt for the amount.  And remember, all donations are TAX DEDUCTIBLE!

Yes thats right!  You want a nice tax deduction for a charitable donation?  Give it to the band and we will provide you with a receipt you can use on your tax return!

You can send your donation with your student, if you have one in the band, or mail it directly to the boosters at:

HTMB Boosters
c/o Michael Risner
PO Box 5781
Glendale, CA 91221

Include your return address and we will send you a receipt back for your donation.

Upcoming, we have the Hoover Block Party on April 16th.  Come join Hoover, Toll and Keppel for a really great block party after Spring Break.  The Hoover Band will perform and we will have a food booth set up selling pizza by the slice!  Bring an appetite and a few dollars and let us feed you and entertain you!

If you wish more information on anything in these posts, please contact me at:

Thanks much!

We Have a Vehicle!

Greetings supporters!

Good news to report!   We have a vehicle for the band to use to transport instruments and gear.

This vehicle was given to me to be used by the band, by a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.  This truck is a retired U-Haul, as you can clearly see from the bright orange paint.

It is a 1993 GMC TopKick with just about 220,000 miles on it.  Mechanics at U-Haul have told me that this truck could easily run another 100k, they are that sturdy and dependable.

It does need some minor mechanical repairs, but it runs well and made the drive from Riverside to Glendale over the past weekend without incident.

We will be needing a new paint job, and some customizing of the interior space once that space is designed and engineered, some body work (the bumper is loose) and a few more things.

I welcome your input or assistance in getting this great truck customized and ready for the band.

More as I learn it!  And hopefully soon, the results from the E-Waste event also!

Thanks for reading the HTMB Booster page!
